University of Central Lancashire

Case Study

About

First opening its doors in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge, the institute was granted full university status in 1992 and became the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

With a student and staff count nearing 38,000, UCLan is one of the UK’s largest universities and operates across multiple campuses. Offering over 600 undergraduate and postgraduate courses, UCLan is committed to delivering world class education to a broad pool of academic talent.

The Project

The University of Central Lancashire has planned an extensive campus remodelling project with a vision to create an attractive and inviting campus with numerous technological updates which truly reflects their status as one of the UK’s top universities.

As part of the project, UCLan required an electrical contractor to support the university’s remodelling plans by delivering their structured cabling and installation requirements including data, telephony, video, access-control, building management and surveillance systems.

The smooth running of the information technology systems is paramount to UCLan’s success and meeting their targets. As a result, they needed to feel comfortable fully relying on the Contractor’s expertise, ability and knowledge of the system being proposed, and that they will provide the highest standard of care in performing its obligation as defined in the Scope of Works. UCLan also required an electrical contractor who could handle day to day maintenance works, major project works and be able to provide a ‘rapid response’ service if necessary.

The client required a fixed term contract which included fixed costs in order to efficiently maintain and manage their budgets.

The framework has involved a large variety of structured cabling and installation works for UCLan. Among the works completed are CCTV duct surveys; the installation of room timetable screens and Student Attendance Monitoring (SAM) readers; telephony installations; campus-wide Wi-Fi surveys; the fitting of swipe access systems; replacement of existing trunking and numerous fibre cabling installations.

Conclusion

Sudlows have supported The University of Central Lancashire in their extensive remodelling project by delivering IT infrastructure works that have improved security and connectivity which will benefit the current and future generations of students, staff and the wider community.
